Danish artist Jakob Kudsk Steensen creates poetic reconstructions of natural phenomena through virtual world-building, spatial sound and large-scale installations, addressing how climate change reshapes our connection to the living world. His practice is rooted in extended periods of fieldwork conducted with biologists, composers and philosophers.
For Mudam, Steensen is developing a new chapter of his ongoing project The Kuutar Garden, a digital reconstruction of one of the world’s northernmost botanical gardens, based on more than four years of research on-site in Oulu, Finland.
The project will immerse audiences in a world suspended between life and extinction, where artificial moons shine a light on endangered plants and seed archives. Grounded in his education as both a maker and scholar of art, Steensen combines scientific methods with digital visualisation in order to make visible what might otherwise disappear.
